Garcinia and Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Garcinia interacts with whole categories of medication. Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Garcinia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine

Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Excedrin and Garcinia together. The acetaminophen in Excedrin is processed by your liver, and in higher doses it's one of the more common causes of medication-related liver stress. Garcinia has its own rare reports of liver trouble (acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes). So the worry isn't a chemical tug-of-war, it's that two things that can each tax the liver might add up.

To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not something proven for this combo, so I wouldn't panic. Still, watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and don't exceed the acetaminophen dosing. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you have any liver issues or drink alcohol.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

2 of 2

Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
HCA inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. The inhibitory effect seems to be greater in platelets extracted from diabetic subjects than non-diabetic subjects.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about combining Garcinia with Excedrin: the aspirin in that product is already a blood thinner that keeps your platelets from clumping together. In lab dishes, the hydroxycitric acid (HCA) in Garcinia also seems to slow platelets down a bit. So in theory, stacking the two could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher than aspirin alone.

In real life, this could show up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, or a cut that takes longer to stop. But I want to be honest with you: this is only theoretical, based on how the ingredients behave in a test tube, not from people taking both together. It's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you have any bleeding concerns, but it's not a reason to panic.

Garcinia
  • Weight loss
  • Appetite suppression
  • Curbing sugar and carb cravings
  • Supporting metabolism
  • Traditional cooking and souring agent

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
