ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
HCA inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. The inhibitory effect seems to be greater in platelets extracted from diabetic subjects than non-diabetic subjects.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The product you're asking about (Fiorinal with Codeine) contains aspirin, which already thins the blood a little by keeping platelets from clumping together. Here's the concern: in lab studies, the hydroxycitric acid in Garcinia also seems to slow platelets down. Stacking the two could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk a bit higher. Think easier bruising, nosebleeds that take longer to stop, or bleeding from the stomach lining (something aspirin can cause on its own).

I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical interaction based on test-tube work, not real patient reports, so I wouldn't panic. Still, before adding Garcinia, run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially since aspirin and bleeding are already a known pair.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate page

“Fiorinal with Codeine packs four active drugs into one capsule, and I would treat its supplement list with genuine wariness rather than a quick skim. The aspirin component is why roughly half of the 398 ingredients on file raise bleeding risk, while the codeine and butalbital explain a second large cluster that deepens sedation, someti…”
