Garcinia and Metformin, Linagliptin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Metformin, Linagliptin

Metformin, Linagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Jentadueto pairs two diabetes medicines, metformin and linagliptin, that work together to lower your blood sugar. The concern with Garcinia is pretty simple: its active ingredient, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), might nudge your blood sugar down too. Stack that on top of your medication, and in theory the combined push could drop your sugar lower than you want.

I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical. The sugar-lowering effect of HCA has only shown up in animal studies, not in people. Still, it's worth watching for signs of low blood sugar, like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy. Please don't change anything on your own. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Garcinia, especially since it has been linked to rare liver problems.

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control.
