Garcinia and Nateglinide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Nateglinide

Nateglinide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Nateglinide (Starlix) already works by nudging your pancreas to release insulin, which brings your blood sugar down right around mealtimes. Garcinia, through its main compound hydroxycitric acid (HCA), might also lower blood sugar a little. Put the two together and the worry is that they could stack up and push your sugar too low.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The blood sugar effect from Garcinia has only shown up in animal studies, not in people, so we're talking theory, not a proven problem. Still, low blood sugar is real with nateglinide, so watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or confusion. If you're thinking about trying Garcinia, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can help you keep an eye on your numbers.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nateglinide page

“People who take nateglinide (Starlix) with meals for type 2 diabetes are often drawn to supplements marketed for blood sugar, and that overlap is why these 290 interactions warrant real caution. Some 239 of the ingredients affect blood sugar on their own, most pushing it lower, so stacking them on nateglinide raises the odds of hypogly…”

  • Supporting metabolism
  • Traditional cooking and souring agent

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
