These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Garcinia interacts with whole categories of medication. Rosiglitazone Maleate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Garcinia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Rosiglitazone Maleate
Rosiglitazone Maleate falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Garcinia and rosiglitazone (Avandia). This isn't about one changing the other's blood levels. Instead, both can be tough on your liver. Rosiglitazone occasionally raises liver enzymes, and Garcinia has been linked in case reports to liver inflammation (hepatitis), sometimes serious. Stacking two things that stress the liver may add up.
I'll be straight with you: this concern is theoretical, based on how each works rather than strong studies. Still, watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and call your doctor if they show up. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you've had liver trouble.

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
2 of 2Rosiglitazone Maleate also falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist if you're taking Avandia (rosiglitazone) and thinking about a Garcinia supplement. Rosiglitazone already works to lower your blood sugar by making your body more sensitive to insulin. The concern on file is that Garcinia's main compound (hydroxycitric acid) might also nudge blood sugar down a little, so stacking the two could push your sugar lower than intended.
I want to be straight with you though: this is purely theoretical. The blood-sugar effect has only shown up in animal studies, never confirmed in people. If your levels did dip too low, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, or unusually hungry. There's also a separate liver safety concern with Garcinia. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, and keep an eye on your readings if you do.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rosiglitazone Maleate page
“Rosiglitazone (Avandia) lowers blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, and most of the 314 supplements and herbs on this page pull on that same lever. Some 239 can move blood glucose on their own, so adding one risks hypoglycemia, the shakiness, sweating, and confusion of sugar falling too low.”

About Garcinia
What is Garcinia?
- Weight loss
- Appetite suppression
- Curbing sugar and carb cravings
- Supporting metabolism
- Traditional cooking and souring agent
Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
About Rosiglitazone
What Is Rosiglitazone Used For?
Brand name: Avandia
-
Rosiglitazone is used along with a diet and exercise program and sometimes with one or more other medications to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Rosiglitazone is in a class of medications called thiazolidinediones. It works by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin, a natural substance that helps control blood sugar levels. Rosiglitazone is not used to treat type 1 diabetes (condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood) or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious condition that may occur if high blood sugar is not treated).
-
Over time, people who have diabetes and high blood sugar can develop serious or life-threatening complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, nerve damage, and eye problems. Taking medication(s), making lifestyle changes (e.g., diet, exercise, quitting smoking), and regularly checking your blood sugar may help to manage your diabetes and improve your health. This therapy may also decrease your chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or other diabetes-related complications such as kidney failure, nerve damage (numb, cold legs or feet; decreased sexual ability in men and women), eye problems, including changes or loss of vision, or gum disease. Your doctor and other healthcare providers will talk to you about the best way to manage your diabetes.
