ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Saxagliptin, metformin XR
Saxagliptin, metformin XR falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Kombiglyze (saxagliptin plus extended-release metformin) and garcinia. Both of these medicines work to lower your blood sugar, and there's a theory that garcinia's active compound, hydroxycitric acid, might gently push your sugar down too. Stacked together, that could in theory add up and tip you into low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can feel like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a racing heart, or sudden hunger.
Now, the honest part: this is only a theory drawn from animal studies, and it hasn't actually been seen in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you decide to try garcinia, keep an eye on your sugar readings and let your pharmacist or doctor know first, especially since garcinia has been linked to rare liver concerns.
