Theoretically, German chamomile might have additive effects when used with CNS depressants.
German chamomile has mild sedative effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with drugs with sedative properties can cause additive effects and side effects.

Here's the simple version. Chamomile tea has a mild calming, sleepy effect of its own. Methadone is a strong opioid that already slows down the brain and breathing. Put the two together and the worry is that those calming effects could stack up, leaving you more drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or slow to react than methadone alone would.

I want to be straight with you though: this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab work, not strong human evidence, and a regular cup of chamomile tea is unlikely to cause much. Concentrated chamomile capsules or extracts are where I'd be more cautious. Because methadone is a serious medicine, please run any chamomile supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first, and never adjust your methadone on your own.

Theoretically, German chamomile might inhibit CYP2D6 and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
In vitro evidence shows that German chamomile might inhibit CYP2D6. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, there might be an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 in patients taking German chamomile.

Here's the gist with chamomile and your methadone. Lab studies hint that chamomile may block an enzyme called CYP2D6, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down methadone. If that pathway slows down, methadone could build up a bit more than usual. Since methadone is an active drug (not a prodrug that needs switching on), more of it could mean stronger opioid effects like extra drowsiness, slowed breathing, or feeling foggy.

Now, the honest part: this is only seen in test-tube research, never confirmed in real people, and an occasional cup of chamomile tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Methadone is a drug where even small shifts matter, so before adding concentrated chamomile supplements, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the gist: your body clears methadone partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. German chamomile, at least in lab dish studies, may slow that enzyme down a bit. If it does, methadone could clear out a little slower and build up in your system, leaning toward stronger opioid effects like extra drowsiness, slowed breathing, or constipation. Methadone is one of those medicines where even modest shifts deserve respect.

That said, this is theoretical. It comes from test-tube work, not real people, and it has never actually been reported in patients. An occasional cup of chamomile tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, before adding concentrated chamomile supplements, check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

German chamomile is a widely used herbal remedy taken mainly as a tea for calming, sleep, and digestive complaints. Early research suggests possible benefits for mild anxiety and some skin or digestive issues, but the evidence is limited and most uses are based on tradition rather than strong proof. It is generally well tolerated, but people allergic to ragweed or related plants and those who are pregnant should be cautious.

About Methadone

What Is Methadone Used For?

Brand name: Dolophine

Methadone treats severe and persistent pain that requires daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment and cannot be managed adequately with other options. It is available in several forms for this use, including oral solution, oral tablets, oral concentrate, and injectable forms (intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous). Injectable methadone is not approved for outpatient pain treatment — it is reserved for hospitalized patients unable to take oral medication.

Methadone is also used for the detoxification and maintenance treatment of opioid addiction (dependence on heroin or other morphine-like drugs). Oral forms — including tablets, dispersible tablets (such as Methadose Dispersible and DISKETS), and oral concentrates (such as Methadone Hydrochloride Intensol™, Methadose, and others) — are approved for this use. By law, methadone for opioid addiction treatment must be dispensed only by certified opioid treatment programs. Injectable methadone is not approved for outpatient addiction treatment.
