Why this applies to Dexlansoprazole

Dexlansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Goldenseal might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Most clinical and in vitro research shows that goldenseal inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and increases serum levels of CYP3A4 substrates, such as midazolam. However, in one small clinical study, goldenseal did not affect the levels of indinavir, a CYP3A4 substrate, in healthy volunteers. This is likely due to the fact that indinavir has a high oral bioavailability, making it an inadequate probe for CYP3A4 interactions and/or that it is primarily metabolized by hepatic CYP3A, while goldenseal has more potential to inhibit intestinal CYP3A enzyme activity. Both goldenseal extract and its isolated constituents berberine and hydrastine inhibit CYP3A, with hydrastine possibly having more inhibitory potential than berberine.

Here's the gist with goldenseal and your Dexilant. Goldenseal tends to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and dexlansoprazole is partly cleared by that pathway (it leans more on CYP2C19, but 3A4 helps too). So when the enzyme is dampened, a bit more of the drug can linger in your system than usual.

In plain terms, that could mean a slightly stronger effect, and possibly more of the typical mild side effects this med can cause, like headache, diarrhea, gas, or nausea. The evidence here is moderate and not specific to dexlansoprazole, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, before you pair goldenseal supplements with Dexilant, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Dexlansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Dexilant Solutab

Dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules — sold as Dexilant and available as a generic — are used in patients 12 years of age and older to heal erosive esophagitis (EE), which is damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid. They are also used to keep that damage healed and relieve heartburn over time.

In addition, dexlansoprazole treats heartburn from non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — that is, acid reflux that causes symptoms without visible damage to the esophagus. Both Dexilant and generic dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules share these same approved uses.
