Trandolapril falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Theoretically, goldenseal might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, an analysis of clinical research shows that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. However, this effect has not been reported with goldenseal.

Here's the gist: Trandolapril (Mavik) already lowers your blood pressure as an ACE inhibitor. Goldenseal contains berberine, which in animal studies and some human research (using berberine itself, not goldenseal) showed its own modest blood-pressure-lowering effect. So the theoretical worry is simple stacking. Take both, and your pressure could drift lower than intended.

If that happened, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or woozy when standing up quickly. I'll be honest with you though: this is mostly a theory based on how these things work, and the blood-pressure effect hasn't actually been pinned on goldenseal specifically. It's not a reason to panic. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding goldenseal so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

What Is Trandolapril Used For?

Brand name: Mavik

Trandolapril tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). They can be used on their own or combined with other blood pressure medicines such as hydrochlorothiazide.

Trandolapril tablets are also used in stable patients who have reduced heart pumping function (left-ventricular systolic dysfunction) or heart failure that developed within the first few days after a heart attack. In Caucasian patients, trandolapril has been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular death and reduce hospitalizations related to heart failure.
