Beclomethasone dipropionate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the basic idea: your beclomethasone inhalers (Qvar, QNASL) are partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Berberine, the active compound in goldthread, might slow that enzyme down a little. In theory, that could let a bit more of the steroid hang around in your body.

The good news is this is very much a theoretical concern, based on lab and animal data, and it hasn't actually been reported in people. Inhaled beclomethasone also delivers a fairly small dose right to the airways, so the risk is low. Still, with concentrated goldthread supplements, watch for things like thrush in the mouth, hoarseness, or other steroid-related effects if used long term. I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Qvar, QNASL

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (brand: Qvar Redihaler) is used for the ongoing, daily management of asthma in adults and children 5 years of age and older. It is a preventive (maintenance) therapy — not a rescue inhaler — meaning it helps control asthma over time rather than treating sudden symptoms.

Important: Qvar Redihaler is not for the relief of sudden asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm. Always keep a separate fast-acting (rescue) inhaler on hand for those moments.
