OXYCODONE (Oxycontin)

Grapefruit juice can increase blood levels of oxycodone, potentially increasing the effects and adverse effects of oxycodone.
Oxycodone is metabolized by both cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6). A small clinical study shows that grapefruit juice can increase plasma levels of oral oxycodone about 1.7-fold by inhibiting CYP3A4. While the analgesic effects of oxycodone do not seem to be affected, taking grapefruit juice along with oxycodone may theoretically increase the adverse effects of oxycodone.

Here's the deal with Targiniq ER, which pairs oxycodone with naloxone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear the oxycodone part out of your system. Grapefruit slows that enzyme down, so the oxycodone hangs around longer and builds up. A small study found grapefruit juice raised oxycodone levels by about 1.7 times.

Interestingly, the pain relief didn't seem to change much, but the higher levels could mean more of oxycodone's typical side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea, and in larger amounts, slowed breathing. Since this is an opioid, I wouldn't take chances. Please run your grapefruit habit by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two regularly.
