Valsartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Grapefruit interacts with.

Theoretically, grapefruit juice might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research suggests that grapefruit juice might inhibit CYP2C9 enzymes. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for valsartan (Diovan) and grapefruit. The thought is that grapefruit might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, which plays a minor role in clearing valsartan. If that happened, a bit more valsartan could linger in your system, which in theory could nudge its blood pressure lowering effect a little stronger. That might show up as feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or unusually tired, especially when standing up quickly.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes only from test-tube research, and it has never actually been reported in real people taking valsartan. Valsartan is also mostly cleared unchanged, not heavily by this enzyme. Still, if you enjoy grapefruit regularly, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Valsartan

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and to lower the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have reduced heart function. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (generic) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
