Montelukast Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Grapefruit interacts with.

Theoretically, grapefruit juice might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research suggests that grapefruit juice might inhibit CYP2C9 enzymes. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Singulair (montelukast) and grapefruit. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear montelukast from your body. Lab studies (in test tubes, not real people) hint that grapefruit may slow that enzyme down. If that happened, montelukast could build up a little, which in theory might mean more of its usual mild side effects, like headache, stomach upset, or feeling tired.

The honest takeaway: this is a theoretical concern only. It has never actually been reported in humans, and montelukast is a fairly forgiving medicine, not the kind where small changes are dangerous. Enjoying grapefruit now and then is very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you eat it often or have questions, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Montelukast Used For?

Brand name: Singulair

Montelukast is used for the long-term prevention and treatment of asthma in children and adults, and for preventing breathing problems triggered by exercise (exercise-induced bronchoconstriction). It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial allergic rhinitis (year-round nasal allergies). The age ranges covered depend on the specific product form — tablets, chewable tablets, and oral granules are each approved for different age groups.

For allergic rhinitis, montelukast should be reserved for people who haven't responded well to other treatments, because its potential mental health risks may outweigh the benefits when nasal allergy symptoms are mild and other options work. It is not a rescue treatment for sudden asthma attacks — always keep a fast-acting inhaler on hand.
