Abemaciclib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body clears abemaciclib (Verzenio) mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, hibiscus extract slowed that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in a person, it could theoretically let abemaciclib build up, which might mean more of its usual side effects like diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, or low blood counts.

The important part: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, and it has never actually been reported in people. A cup or two of tart hibiscus tea is unlikely to matter much. Concentrated hibiscus supplements are the bigger question mark. Since abemaciclib is a serious cancer medicine, please run any hibiscus product past your oncology pharmacist or doctor first.

Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tart, cranberry-flavored plant most often consumed as a tea, and its best-studied use is for mildly lowering blood pressure. Evidence for other uses is limited, and while hibiscus tea is generally well tolerated in food amounts, concentrated supplements should be used cautiously and avoided in pregnancy. About Abemaciclib

What Is Abemaciclib Used For?

Brand name: Verzenio

Verzenio (abemaciclib) is used to treat HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer in adults. For early breast cancer at high risk of recurrence, Verzenio is taken alongside endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) after surgery to help prevent the cancer from coming back.

For advanced or metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread), Verzenio can be used in combination with an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment, in combination with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on endocrine therapy, or alone after prior endocrine therapy and chemotherapy have stopped working.
