Dronedarone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your heart-rhythm medicine, dronedarone, is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not people) suggest hibiscus may gently slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, dronedarone could build up a little more than usual, which in theory might mean stronger effects or more side effects like nausea, tiredness, slow heartbeat, or dizziness.

The important part: this has never actually been reported in humans, so it's a theoretical concern only. A cup of tart hibiscus tea now and then is unlikely to be a problem. Concentrated hibiscus supplements are where I'd be more cautious. Since dronedarone is a touchy drug, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding hibiscus regularly.

Here's the gist: dronedarone (Multaq) is handled in part by a liver enzyme called CYP2C8. In lab dish studies, hibiscus extract appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, your body might clear dronedarone a little less efficiently, so slightly more could build up. With dronedarone, more drug can mean things like nausea, tiredness, slow heartbeat, or dizziness.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only a test-tube finding, and it has never actually been seen in people. A cup of tart hibiscus tea now and then is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated hibiscus supplements are more of a question mark. Since dronedarone is a heart-rhythm drug with a tight safety window, please run any hibiscus supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tart, cranberry-flavored plant most often consumed as a tea, and its best-studied use is for mildly lowering blood pressure. About Dronedarone

What Is Dronedarone Used For?

Brand name: Multaq

Multaq (dronedarone) tablets are used to reduce the risk of being hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) — an irregular, often rapid heart rhythm. It is approved for adults who are currently in normal sinus rhythm but have a history of paroxysmal (comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation.

Multaq is not appropriate for everyone with AF. It must not be used in people with permanent atrial fibrillation or in those with recently worsened heart failure requiring hospitalization — these patients face a doubled risk of death, stroke, and hospitalization if they take it.
