In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP2D6. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Tussionex (hydrocodone plus chlorpheniramine) and hibiscus. Lab studies in a test tube suggest hibiscus may slow down an enzyme called CYP2D6. Hydrocodone is partly turned into a stronger pain-relieving form by that very enzyme, so in theory slowing it could shift how much active effect you feel. Chlorpheniramine, the antihistamine part, also leans on CYP2D6 to be cleared.

The honest truth is this is theoretical only and has never been seen in real people. A cup of tart hibiscus tea is unlikely to matter much. Still, since this combo already causes drowsiness and slowed breathing, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before adding concentrated hibiscus supplements.

Here's the gist with Tussionex (hydrocodone plus chlorpheniramine) and hibiscus. Lab studies in a test tube suggest hibiscus extract may slow down an enzyme in your liver called CYP3A4, which helps break down the hydrocodone part of this cough syrup. If that enzyme works more slowly, hydrocodone could linger a bit longer, in theory nudging up its effects like drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern. It has never actually been reported in real people, and an occasional cup of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated hibiscus supplements are where I'd be a little more careful. Since this is an opioid, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
