Irinotecan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with irinotecan (Camptosar) and hibiscus. Irinotecan is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab dish, concentrated hibiscus extract slowed that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in your body, irinotecan could clear a little more slowly and hang around longer, which in theory might bump up its side effects like diarrhea, low blood counts, nausea, or fatigue.

The honest part: this has never actually been seen in people. It's a theoretical concern based only on test-tube data, and the rating is minor. An occasional cup of tart hibiscus tea is unlikely to matter. Still, irinotecan is a powerful chemo drug, so please run any concentrated hibiscus supplement by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

  • Irinotecan lipid complex is used in combination with other medications to treat pancreatic cancer that has spread to other parts of the body that has worsened after treatment with other chemotherapy medications.
