Maraviroc falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with hibiscus and your Selzentry (maraviroc). Maraviroc is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab dish, hibiscus extract slowed that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, maraviroc could build up slightly, which in theory might mean more of its usual side effects like dizziness, headache, stomach upset, or feeling tired.

The good news: this is purely theoretical. It has never actually been reported in people, and the concern comes from concentrated extracts, not a normal cup of tart hibiscus tea now and then. Maraviroc isn't a prodrug, so this would tilt toward stronger effects rather than weaker ones. Still, since this drug is keeping your HIV controlled, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using hibiscus supplements regularly.

Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tart, cranberry-flavored plant most often consumed as a tea, and its best-studied use is for mildly lowering blood pressure. About Maraviroc

What Is Maraviroc Used For?

Brand names: Celsentri, Selzentry

Maraviroc treats a specific type of HIV-1 infection called CCR5-tropic HIV-1. It is always used alongside other antiretroviral (anti-HIV) medicines — never alone. A special test called a tropism assay must be done before starting treatment to confirm you have the right type of HIV.

Selzentry (the brand-name oral solution and tablet) is approved for adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 2 kg. Generic maraviroc tablets are approved for adults and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older weighing at least 10 kg. Neither form is recommended for patients whose HIV is classified as dual/mixed-tropic or CXCR4-tropic.
