Norgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for your mini-pill (norgestrel). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down this progestin. In lab dish studies, hibiscus extract appears to slow that same enzyme down a little. In theory, that could let slightly more norgestrel hang around, which might mean a bit more of the usual progestin effects like spotting, breast tenderness, headache, or mood changes.

The reassuring part: this is theoretical only, based on test-tube work, and it has never actually been seen in real people. Everyday hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated hibiscus supplements are where I'd be a touch more careful. If you plan to use those regularly, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
