Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
DIURETIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Bumetanide
Bumetanide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: Bumetanide is a strong water pill, and one of its known quirks is that it can flush potassium out of your body along with the extra fluid. Guayusa tea brings caffeine to the table, and caffeine can nudge potassium lower too by pushing it back into your cells. Put the two together and, in theory, your potassium could dip a little more than it would from the medication alone.
I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical, based on how these things work rather than strong studies, and an occasional cup of guayusa is unlikely to cause trouble. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, so if you drink it regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and let them check your potassium.

About Ilex Guayusa
What is Ilex Guayusa?
- Energy and alertness
- Mental focus
- Antioxidant support
- Appetite control
- Athletic and physical performance
Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
About Bumetanide
What Is Bumetanide Used For?
Brand name: Burinex
Bumetanide treats edema, which is swelling from extra fluid in the body. The label covers edema linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic (liver) disease and renal (kidney) disease, including nephrotic syndrome.
Bumex and bumetanide tablets, bumetanide injection, and Enbumyst nasal spray all carry this use. Enbumyst is specifically labeled for adults. The tablet and injection labels also note that bumetanide has worked in people who had allergic reactions to furosemide, which suggests a lack of cross-sensitivity.
