Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)
Why this applies to Moclobemide
Moclobemide falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.
Ilex guayusa can contain caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Moclobemide is a reversible MAO-A inhibitor used for depression. Guayusa tea is a natural source of caffeine, and here's where caution comes in: caffeine itself can mildly slow down MAO enzymes in lab studies. When you pair that with an MAOI like moclobemide, the concern is that caffeine may not be cleared as smoothly, and you could see an exaggerated stimulant response, things like a pounding heart, jitteriness, raised blood pressure, or a bad headache.
Keep in mind this is a theoretical worry based on how these compounds behave, not strong human evidence, and an occasional cup is far less likely to matter than loading up on concentrated guayusa or multiple servings. Still, since a sudden blood pressure spike is serious, please run your caffeine habits by your pharmacist or doctor.

About Ilex Guayusa
What is Ilex Guayusa?
- Energy and alertness
- Mental focus
- Antioxidant support
- Appetite control
- Athletic and physical performance
Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
