Warfarin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ipriflavone interacts with.

Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), Pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline (Slo-bid, Theo-Dur, others), zileuton (Zyflo), Zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here's the gist for warfarin. Ipriflavone may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear part of warfarin. If that pathway gets blocked, warfarin can linger longer and its blood-thinning effect can creep upward. With a drug as finely tuned as warfarin, even a small shift can push your INR too high and raise the chance of bruising, nosebleeds, or more serious bleeding.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this is mostly theoretical, based on lab studies, not real patient reports. So don't panic. But warfarin leaves no room for guessing, so please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding ipriflavone, and they may want to check your INR a bit more closely.

Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include amitriptyline (Elavil), diazepam (Valium), estradiol (Estrace), tacrine (Cognex), verapamil (Calan), warfarin (Coumadin), zileuton (Zyflo), and others.

Here's the concern with pairing these two. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear warfarin out of your system. Ipriflavone is thought to slow that enzyme down, so warfarin could leave your body more slowly and build up to higher levels than usual. With a higher warfarin level, your blood gets thinner than intended, which raises the risk of bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or more serious bleeding.

Warfarin is a drug where even small shifts matter, so this is worth taking seriously. That said, the evidence here is mostly from lab studies, not real patients, so it's a theoretical concern rather than a proven one. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, and if you do combine them, your INR should be checked more closely.

Ipriflavone is a synthetic isoflavone studied mainly for bone health and osteoporosis, but high-quality research has not shown that it reliably prevents fractures or builds strong bone. What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand name: Warfarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
