Losartan Potassium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Ipriflavone interacts with.

Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include amitriptyline (Elavil), diazepam (Valium), estradiol (Estrace), tacrine (Cognex), verapamil (Calan), warfarin (Coumadin), zileuton (Zyflo), and others.

Here's a wrinkle worth knowing about losartan (Cozaar). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to turn losartan into its more powerful active form, so losartan is partly a prodrug. Ipriflavone may block that same enzyme in lab studies. If it slows that conversion, you could end up with less of the active form, which may mean losartan does a weaker job of lowering your blood pressure.

The good news is that this concern comes only from test-tube and animal research, not from people, so we really don't know how much it matters in real life. Still, if you take losartan and want to try ipriflavone, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings at home.

Ipriflavone is a synthetic isoflavone studied mainly for bone health and osteoporosis, but high-quality research has not shown that it reliably prevents fractures or builds strong bone. Because it can lower white blood cell counts in some people and its long-term safety is not well established, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
