Omeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Ipriflavone interacts with.

Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include amitriptyline (Elavil), diazepam (Valium), estradiol (Estrace), tacrine (Cognex), verapamil (Calan), warfarin (Coumadin), zileuton (Zyflo), and others.

Here's the simple version. Ipriflavone may gently block one of the liver enzymes (CYP2C9) that helps clear omeprazole from your body. If that pathway slows down, a bit more omeprazole could linger in your bloodstream. For most people that just means a stronger or longer acid-reducing effect, and possibly more of omeprazole's usual side effects like headache, nausea, stomach upset, or diarrhea.

The good news: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab studies, not real-world cases, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Omeprazole is also handled by another enzyme (CYP2C19), so blocking one path doesn't shut everything down. Still, since ipriflavone's long-term safety isn't well known, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
