Ipriflavone and Beclomethasone dipropionate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Beclomethasone dipropionate

Beclomethasone dipropionate falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Ipriflavone interacts with.

Concurrent use of ipriflavone and immunosuppressant drugs might have additive effects on inhibiting immune function. Some patients taking ipriflavone experience subclinical lymphocytopenia; avoid concurrent use. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about pairing ipriflavone with your beclomethasone inhaler (Qvar) or nasal spray (QNASL). Ipriflavone has been shown in some people to lower white blood cell counts, specifically lymphocytes, which are part of your immune defense. Beclomethasone is a corticosteroid, and steroids can also dampen the immune system a bit. The concern is that the two together could add up and leave you more open to infections.

Now, I want to keep this in perspective. Inhaled and nasal beclomethasone act mostly right where you spray them, with relatively little reaching the rest of the body, so the immune effect is usually small. Still, since this interaction is graded as moderate and the white-count concern is real, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than starting on your own.

About Ipriflavone

What is Ipriflavone?

Ipriflavone
  • Bone density and osteoporosis
  • Postmenopausal bone loss
  • Athletic performance
  • Tinnitus related to bone disorders

Ipriflavone is a synthetic isoflavone studied mainly for bone health and osteoporosis, but high-quality research has not shown that it reliably prevents fractures or builds strong bone. Because it can lower white blood cell counts in some people and its long-term safety is not well established, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Qvar, QNASL

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (the oral inhaler, sold as Qvar Redihaler) is used for the long-term, preventive treatment of asthma in people 5 years of age and older.

It is not a rescue inhaler. It does not relieve sudden asthma symptoms such as shortness of breath. The nasal spray form, Qnasl, appears in the supplied label text in studies of allergic rhinitis (nasal allergy symptoms), but no approved uses for it are listed there.
