Here's the idea behind this pairing. Rituximab (Rixuan) is a powerful infused medication that works by quieting down or removing part of your immune system, whether you're using it for lymphoma, leukemia, or rheumatoid arthritis. Jiaogulan, on the other hand, has shown signs in lab and animal studies that it may do the opposite and rev up immune activity. So in theory, the two could work against each other, and the worry is that jiaogulan might slightly blunt how well rituximab does its job.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern only, based on how these compounds behave in studies, not on real patient cases. Still, with a treatment this important, I wouldn't want to take chances. Please check with your oncologist or rheumatologist before adding jiaogulan, so they can weigh in for your situation.

What Is Rituximab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Rituxan

Rituximab is used to treat a range of blood cancers and immune-driven diseases. In cancer care, it targets certain types of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) — both in adults and, for some lymphomas, in children as young as 6 months old.

Beyond cancer, rituximab is also approved for moderately-to-severely active Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in adults who haven't responded well to other treatments, as well as for two rare inflammatory blood vessel diseases — Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA) and Microscopic Polyangiitis (MPA) — and for a serious skin blistering condition called Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV).
