Theoretically, jiaogulan might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this combination: Ticlopidine is already a strong antiplatelet medicine, meaning it makes your blood less likely to clot so platelets don't clump together. Jiaogulan may do a similar thing on its own. In lab studies (test-tube research only), compounds in this herb seemed to slow platelets down too. Stack the two together and you could, in theory, tip the balance toward too little clotting.

What that might look like in real life is easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop. To be fair, this is theoretical and based on weak evidence, not human studies, so don't panic. Still, with a blood thinner like ticlopidine, I'd check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding jiaogulan.

What Is Ticlopidine Used For?

Brand names: Ticlid, Ticlopidine

  • Ticlopidine is used to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have had a stroke or have had warning signs of a stroke and who cannot be treated with aspirin. Ticlopidine is also used along with aspirin to prevent blood clots from forming in coronary stents (metal tubes surgically placed in clogged blood vessels to improve blood flow). It works by preventing platelets (a type of blood cell) from collecting and forming clots.
