abatacept falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that mace lignans can suppress immune function. Theoretically, concomitant use might enhance the effects of immunosuppressant drugs. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the short version on mace and Orencia (abatacept): abatacept already calms down an overactive immune system to ease your rheumatoid arthritis. The concern is that mace may have a mild immune-quieting effect of its own, so in theory the two together could push your immune defenses down a little further than intended.

I want to be honest about how weak this is. It comes only from animal lab studies, not from people, so it's more of a what-if than a proven problem. The realistic worry would be a slightly higher chance of infections, which is already something to watch with abatacept. Cooking with mace as a spice is very unlikely to matter. A concentrated mace supplement is a different story, so please run that past your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.

What Is Abatacept Injection Used For?

Brand name: Orencia

Orencia is approved for adults with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and adults and children 2 years and older with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA) or moderately to severely active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA) — a type of arthritis that affects multiple joints in children.

Orencia is also used, alongside two other medicines (a calcineurin inhibitor and methotrexate), to prevent acute graft versus host disease (aGVHD) — a serious immune reaction — in adults and children 2 and older who receive a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor.
