Ropinirole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that intraperitoneal injections of myristicin, a constituent of mace, can induce cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme system. Theoretically, concomitant use of mace with drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 may increase the clearance of these drugs and reduce their effects. Some substrates of CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here's the gist for ropinirole: your body clears this medicine mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Mace contains a compound (myristicin) that, in animal studies, seems to speed up that enzyme. In theory, a revved-up enzyme could clear ropinirole out of your system a little faster, which might make it work less well. For Parkinson's that could mean more shaking, stiffness, or slowed movement creeping back, and for restless legs it could mean those uncomfortable, jittery urges returning.

Now, the honest part: this is theoretical, based on lab and animal data, not real-world cases. Normal cooking amounts of mace are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated mace supplements are the bigger question mark, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting one.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.

What Is Ropinirole Used For?

Brand names: Requip, Adartrel

Ropinirole tablets are used to treat two conditions: Parkinson's disease and moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) — the uncomfortable urge to move the legs, especially at night or at rest.

Ropinirole extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for Parkinson's disease only. If you take the extended-release form, it is not approved for RLS — that use applies to the regular (immediate-release) tablets.
