Janumet pairs two diabetes medicines, metformin and sitagliptin, that both work to bring your blood sugar down. The thing to know here is that maitake mushroom may have a mild blood sugar lowering effect of its own. So when you stack it on top of your Janumet, the two can add up, and your sugar could dip lower than you expect.

If that happens, watch for the usual low blood sugar signs: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a racing heart, or feeling suddenly hungry or foggy. The evidence for this is still on the lighter side, and a mushroom serving in a meal is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated maitake supplements are the bigger question. Before adding one, check with your pharmacist or doctor so you can keep an eye on your readings.
