Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: maitake mushroom may gently lower blood pressure on its own. In some animal studies it nudged blood pressure down, though we don't have solid human proof yet. Sodium nitroprusside (Nipride RTU) is already a powerful blood pressure lowering medicine, given by IV in a hospital and carefully adjusted minute by minute. The worry is that adding maitake's mild effect on top could push your pressure too low.

In practice, this is a hospital-only drug that your care team monitors very closely, so they would catch and adjust for any extra drop. Still, if you take maitake supplements, mention it to your doctor or pharmacist. Signs of pressure going too low include dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint. This concern is theoretical, so don't panic, just keep your team informed.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sodium Nitroprusside page

“Sodium nitroprusside (Nipride RTU) is given by IV in hospitals to bring dangerously high blood pressure down within minutes, so anything that nudges pressure in either direction earns real vigilance here. All but two of the 121 supplements and herbs on this page interact through blood pressure itself, and the three major-rated entries…”

About Maitake Mushroom

What is Maitake Mushroom?

Maitake Mushroom
  • Immune support
  • Blood sugar support in diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • General wellness and antioxidant support

Maitake is an edible mushroom long used as food and in traditional Japanese medicine, and it is being studied for possible immune, blood sugar, and blood pressure effects. The human evidence is still limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. It is generally well tolerated as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
