HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Abacavir, Lamivudine
Abacavir, Lamivudine falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. Your HIV medicine Epzicom (abacavir and lamivudine) is processed by your liver, and like many medicines, it can occasionally put some strain on it. Padang cassia, a type of cassia cinnamon, naturally contains a compound called coumarin that can stress the liver too, especially in large, concentrated supplement doses. Stacking two things that lean on the liver is the concern here.
Honestly, this is a theoretical worry, not something proven to happen with this combo. The amount of cinnamon you sprinkle on food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules taken daily are a different story. Watch for signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting any cinnamon supplement.

About Padang Cassia
What is Padang Cassia?
- Adding flavor to food
- Digestive upset
- Blood sugar support
- Antimicrobial purposes
- Antioxidant support
Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
