Amoxicillin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the thing to know about pairing concentrated Padang cassia (a cassia cinnamon) with amoxicillin. The concern isn't that cinnamon changes how amoxicillin works or how your body clears it. Instead, both can be a little tough on the liver. Cassia cinnamon naturally contains coumarin, which in large supplement doses has been linked to liver irritation, and amoxicillin (especially with longer courses) can occasionally bump up liver enzymes too.

This is a theoretical worry based mostly on the chemistry, not strong human studies, so I don't want to alarm you. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is no problem. The caution is really about high-dose cinnamon capsules taken alongside your antibiotic, particularly if you already have liver trouble. Watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, or belly pain, and check with your pharmacist before adding a cinnamon supplement.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Amoxicillin Used For?

Brand names: Amoxil Capsules, Trimox, Wymox, Amix, Amoram, Amoxident, Galenamox, Rimoxallin, Amoxil Injection

Amoxicillin treats bacterial infections in both adults and children, including ear, nose, and throat infections; lower respiratory tract infections; skin and skin structure infections; and genitourinary tract infections.

In adults only, amoxicillin is also used — always combined with other medications — to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), the bacteria behind duodenal ulcers. Getting rid of H. pylori has been shown to reduce the chance of those ulcers coming back. It is only effective against bacteria that are susceptible to it and will not work against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
