Prednisone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the quick picture with prednisone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process this steroid. In a test-tube study, concentrated Padang cassia (a type of cassia cinnamon) slowed that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let prednisone build up slightly and make its effects, and side effects, a little stronger. Think things like trouble sleeping, mood swings, a bump in blood sugar, fluid retention, or stomach upset.

The good news: this is only lab-based evidence, not something seen in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food is no problem. If you're thinking about a daily cinnamon supplement alongside prednisone, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice.
