Padang Cassia and Glyburide

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Padang Cassia interacts with whole categories of medication. Glyburide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Padang Cassia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Glyburide

Glyburide falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to know about pairing concentrated cinnamon supplements like Padang Cassia with glyburide. This type of cinnamon naturally contains a compound called coumarin, and in large amounts coumarin can stress the liver. Glyburide, while not famous for causing liver trouble, is occasionally linked to liver irritation. The worry is that stacking two things that can each lean on your liver might add up, especially if you already have liver concerns.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not solid proof. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is no problem. Daily high-dose capsules are a different story. Before starting a cinnamon supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

2 of 2

Glyburide also falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS.

Some clinical research shows that Padang cassia can reduce blood glucose levels in healthy patients and in patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes). Theoretically, Padang cassia might have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetes drugs. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications may be necessary.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep an eye on if you're pairing cinnamon supplements with glyburide. Glyburide already pushes your pancreas to release more insulin to bring your blood sugar down. Some lower-quality studies suggest Padang cassia (a type of cassia cinnamon) may nudge blood sugar down a little on its own. Stacked together, the concern is an additive effect, meaning your sugar could dip lower than expected.

In practice, that might show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, hunger, or feeling foggy, which are classic low blood sugar signs with glyburide. The evidence here is modest and the cinnamon effect is mild, so the sprinkle on your oatmeal is no worry. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story. If you want to add those, check with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can watch your numbers.

About Padang Cassia

What is Padang Cassia?

  • Adding flavor to food
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial purposes
  • Antioxidant support

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
