Padang Cassia and Insulin (Human)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin (Human)

Insulin (Human) falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

Some clinical research shows that Padang cassia can reduce blood glucose levels in healthy patients and in patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes). Theoretically, Padang cassia might have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetes drugs. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications may be necessary.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep an eye on: some studies suggest cassia cinnamon, including Padang cassia, can nudge blood sugar down a little on its own. Since insulin already works hard to lower your blood sugar, stacking a concentrated cinnamon supplement on top could add to that effect. The realistic worry isn't a dangerous spike, it's the opposite, a low blood sugar reaction (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, fast heartbeat).

The evidence here is fairly modest, and a sprinkle of cinnamon on your oatmeal almost certainly won't move the needle. Capsules or high-dose extracts are a different story. If you decide to use one, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and watch your glucose readings closely, since your insulin dose may need adjusting. Don't change anything on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin (Human) page

“With human insulin (Novolin, Afrezza), extra glucose lowering is not a nuisance, it is the hazard itself, and this is one of the lists I treat as genuinely serious. Nearly every ingredient here either drops blood sugar on its own or adds to insulin's effect, and the combination can push a normal dose into hypoglycemia, a dangerous low.”

About Padang Cassia

What is Padang Cassia?

  • Adding flavor to food
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial purposes
  • Antioxidant support

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
