Padang Cassia and Insulin (rDNA)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin (rDNA)

Insulin (rDNA) falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

Some clinical research shows that Padang cassia can reduce blood glucose levels in healthy patients and in patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes). Theoretically, Padang cassia might have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetes drugs. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications may be necessary.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: insulin already works to lower your blood sugar, and some lower-quality studies suggest concentrated cinnamon (like Padang cassia) can nudge blood sugar down a little too. Put them together and those effects may stack up. That means you could be a bit more likely to dip into low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can feel like shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or dizziness.

The evidence here is modest, and the amount of cinnamon you sprinkle on food won't do much. A daily concentrated cinnamon supplement is the real question. If you're considering one, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood sugar readings rather than changing your insulin on your own.

About Padang Cassia

What is Padang Cassia?

  • Adding flavor to food
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial purposes
  • Antioxidant support

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
