Clonazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for clonazepam (Klonopin): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this medication. In test-tube studies, a concentrated extract of Padang cassia cinnamon appeared to slow that same enzyme down. In theory, if clonazepam clears more slowly, more of it could linger in your system, nudging up its effects and side effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, or slowed thinking.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is only laboratory data, not something proven in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is no concern at all. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding those.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Clonazepam Used For?

Clonazepam is approved to treat several types of seizures — including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a severe form of epilepsy), akinetic seizures (sudden loss of muscle tone), myoclonic seizures (sudden muscle jerks), and absence seizures (brief lapses of awareness) in patients who haven't responded to other medicines.

It is also approved for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that might cause panic). Panic disorder involves repeated, unexpected panic attacks along with ongoing worry about having more attacks.
