HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ethionamide
Ethionamide falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know: ethionamide is a tuberculosis medicine that can be tough on the liver all by itself. It's not about an enzyme being sped up or slowed down here. The concern is simply two liver stressors stacking up. Padang cassia (a cassia-type cinnamon) naturally contains coumarin, and in high amounts coumarin has been linked to liver irritation that usually clears up once people stop taking it.
Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is unlikely to be a problem. The worry is with concentrated cinnamon supplements taken daily alongside ethionamide. Watch for things like nausea, belly pain, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or unusual tiredness, and report them. This caution is mostly theoretical, but since you're already on a liver-taxing drug, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a cinnamon supplement.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethionamide page
“Ethionamide, a second-line tuberculosis drug, is already known to stress the liver on its own, and that is exactly where most of this list points. Nearly seven in ten of the interacting supplements carry their own liver risk, so combining them with ethionamide stacks two liver stressors at once.”

About Padang Cassia
What is Padang Cassia?
- Adding flavor to food
- Digestive upset
- Blood sugar support
- Antimicrobial purposes
- Antioxidant support
Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
