Gemfibrozil falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the simple version: gemfibrozil (Lopid) can occasionally be tough on the liver on its own, and concentrated Padang cassia supplements contain a natural compound called coumarin that has also been linked to liver stress in high doses. Put two things together that both lean on the liver, and the worry is that you slightly raise the odds of liver irritation, things like fatigue, belly pain, nausea, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's a theoretical concern based on how these substances behave, not proven harm in people taking both. The cinnamon you sprinkle on your oatmeal is not the issue. The caution is for daily, concentrated cinnamon capsules. Before starting one, check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially since your liver function may already be monitored on gemfibrozil.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. What Is Gemfibrozil Used For?

Brand name: Lopid

Gemfibrozil tablets are used in adults with very high triglyceride (blood fat) levels — especially when those levels are high enough to risk pancreatitis (dangerous inflammation of the pancreas) — and who haven't responded well enough to diet alone.

Gemfibrozil is also used in a specific group of adults who have a combination of low HDL ("good") cholesterol, high LDL ("bad") cholesterol, and high triglycerides, to reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease — but only when diet, exercise, and other treatments haven't been enough. It is always used alongside, not instead of, a heart-healthy diet.
