Norgestrel falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the gist with norgestrel (a progestin-only 'mini-pill') and Padang cassia cinnamon. This isn't about the cinnamon changing how your birth control works or how well it prevents pregnancy. The concern is simpler: both can put a little stress on your liver. Norgestrel, like other hormonal contraceptives, is processed by the liver and can occasionally raise liver enzymes. Padang cassia naturally contains coumarin, which in large, concentrated doses has been linked to liver irritation that goes away once you stop.

To be clear, this is a theoretical caution based on how these things behave, not strong proof of harm. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food is not a worry. The question mark is concentrated cinnamon capsules, especially if you have liver issues. If you're considering a supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the simple version. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down norgestrel, the progestin in your birth control pill. In a test-tube study, a concentrated extract of Padang cassia slowed that enzyme down. If that held true in people, your body might clear the hormone a little more slowly, which could mean slightly higher levels and a bump in typical progestin side effects like spotting, breast tenderness, headache, or nausea.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This comes only from lab data, not from real patients, so it's theoretical. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food is not a concern. The bigger question is concentrated cinnamon capsules. Before starting those, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
