Why this applies to Modafinil

Modafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Passion Flower interacts with.

Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.

Here's the gist for Modafinil and passion flower. Modafinil is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that passion flower may gently speed up that enzyme, which could in theory clear modafinil a little faster and make it feel slightly less effective. For modafinil, that might show up as not quite the same wakefulness boost, with more daytime sleepiness creeping back in.

I'll be honest with you though, this is a weak, theoretical concern. It comes only from test-tube research, and the effect was far smaller than known strong inducers. For most people it won't be a real problem. Still, if you notice your modafinil seems to be working less well after adding passion flower, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
