Norethindrone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Passion Flower interacts with.

Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.

Here's the gist for norethindrone, which is a progestin hormone your liver clears partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. Some lab (test tube) research hints that passion flower might gently speed that enzyme up. If that happened in the body, your liver could clear the norethindrone a bit faster, which in theory might make it work less reliably. For something like birth control or controlling abnormal bleeding, that could mean breakthrough spotting or weaker effect.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is theoretical and only based on lab studies, and the effect looked weak. It may not matter at all in real life. Still, since hormone timing matters, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Norethindrone Used For?

Brand names: Aygestin, Norlutin, Nor-QD, Micronor, Norlutate, Camila, Errin, Jolivette, Nora-BE

Norethindrone is a progestin-only oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. It is taken every day, continuously, without hormone-free breaks — unlike combination birth control pills.

Gallifrey (norethindrone acetate tablets, 5 mg) is a different, higher-dose formulation approved for three additional conditions: secondary amenorrhea (periods that have stopped), endometriosis, and abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance when no structural cause such as fibroids or uterine cancer is present. Gallifrey is not approved or recommended for use alongside estrogen therapy in postmenopausal women for endometrial protection.
