Nevirapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Passion Flower interacts with.

Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.

Here's the gist for nevirapine (Viramune). Your body clears this HIV medicine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, passion flower appeared to speed that enzyme up a little, which in theory could clear nevirapine a bit faster and leave slightly less of it in your blood. With HIV medicines, you want steady, reliable levels so the virus stays controlled, so even small drops are worth respecting.

That said, this is very early evidence, only from test-tube work, and the effect looked much weaker than known strong inducers. So in real life it may not matter much. Still, since keeping HIV suppressed is so important, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding passion flower rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

About Nevirapine

What Is Nevirapine Used For?

Brand names: Viramune, Viramune XR

Nevirapine is used alongside other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection. It is not a cure, but it helps suppress the virus when used as part of a combination regimen.

The immediate-release tablet is approved for adults and pediatric patients 15 days and older. The extended-release tablet is approved for adults and for pediatric patients 6 years of age or older who meet a minimum body surface area requirement. The oral suspension is approved for adults and pediatric patients 15 days and older. None of these formulations should be used alone to treat HIV-1, and none are approved for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
