Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The piece of this combo that matters is phenylephrine, which is a decongestant that mildly stimulates your system to shrink swollen nasal passages. The guaifenesin part just loosens mucus and doesn't really play into this. Pu-erh tea naturally contains caffeine, and caffeine is its own little stimulant. So when you stack the two, you may simply feel more wired than you expected.

In real life that can show up as a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or a bump in blood pressure. This is mostly a theoretical, expert-opinion concern, and a regular cup or two probably won't cause trouble for most people. If you notice palpitations or feel uneasy, or if you have high blood pressure or heart issues, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Forty-four of them can pile extra stimulation on top of the drug's own effect, and five rate major, most…”
