Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the clearance rate of caffeine from pu-erh tea and increase caffeine levels.

Here's the twist worth knowing: in this pairing, it's actually the caffeine in your pu-erh tea that gets affected, not the amiodarone itself. Amiodarone can block an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme your liver uses to clear caffeine. So the tea's caffeine may hang around longer and build up a bit more than usual.

In real life, that might mean feeling more jittery, a racing or fluttery heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or restlessness after your usual cup. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, not something proven in studies, so don't panic. An occasional cup is unlikely to be a big deal. Still, since amiodarone treats serious heart rhythms, it's smart to mention your tea habit to your pharmacist or doctor.

Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).

Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
