These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Pu-erh Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Ephedrine Sulfate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Pu-erh Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
STIMULANT DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Ephedrine Sulfate
Ephedrine Sulfate falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: pu-erh tea has caffeine in it, and caffeine is a stimulant. Ephedrine is also a stimulant. When you stack two stimulants together, their effects can add up. So drinking pu-erh while you're on ephedrine could make the usual ephedrine side effects feel stronger, things like a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, feeling wired, trouble sleeping, higher blood pressure, or a nervous, shaky feeling.
I'll be honest with you, this one is mostly based on expert reasoning rather than strong studies, so for most people a cup or two of tea isn't a crisis. Ephedrine is usually given in a hospital or clinical setting, where your team is watching your heart rate and blood pressure. Still, it's worth mentioning your tea or caffeine habits to your doctor or pharmacist so they can keep an eye on things.

BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS
2 of 2Ephedrine Sulfate also falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Caffeine can increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version. Ephedrine is a stimulant that revs up your heart and blood pressure. Pu-erh tea brings caffeine to the table, and caffeine is a stimulant too. Stack the two and they can add up, making your heart beat harder and faster. You might notice a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or a bump in blood pressure.
I want to be honest about the strength of this concern: it's mostly based on how these compounds work, not strong human studies, so it's more theoretical than proven. A normal cup or two of pu-erh probably isn't a big deal for most people. Large amounts are where it matters more. Since ephedrine itself can be hard on the heart, check with your pharmacist or doctor about how much tea is okay for you.
