Why this applies to Isoniazid
Isoniazid falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the clearance rate of caffeine from pu-erh tea and increase caffeine levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about this pair: it's really about the caffeine in your pu-erh tea, not the isoniazid itself. Isoniazid can gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme your body uses to clear caffeine. So in theory, the caffeine from your tea may hang around longer and build up a bit while you're on isoniazid.
In plain terms, that just means a cup of pu-erh might hit you harder than usual. Think jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. This is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not something proven to cause big problems, and casual tea drinking is usually fine. If you notice extra caffeine sensitivity, ease back on the tea and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Pu-erh tea is a fermented, aged form of tea made from the same plant as green and black tea. It is enjoyed worldwide as a beverage and is sometimes promoted for weight loss, cholesterol, and digestion, but human evidence for these uses is limited. As a normal drink it is generally well tolerated, though it does contain caffeine.
About Isoniazid
What Is Isoniazid Used For?
Brand names: Laniazid, INH, Nydrazid
Isoniazid is used to treat all forms of tuberculosis (TB) caused by susceptible bacteria. Because TB bacteria can quickly become resistant to a single drug, isoniazid must always be combined with other anti-TB medications when treating active TB — it is never used alone for active disease.
Isoniazid is also used as preventive therapy (sometimes called latent TB treatment) for people who have a positive TB skin test but do not yet have active disease. This includes people with HIV infection, close contacts of someone with active TB, recent TB skin test converters, and people with certain medical conditions — such as silicosis, diabetes mellitus, end-stage renal disease, leukemia, or Hodgkin's disease — that raise their TB risk.
