Pu-erh Tea and Bendroflumethiazide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Bendroflumethiazide

Bendroflumethiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, using pu-erh tea with diuretic drugs might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing pu-erh tea with bendroflumethiazide. This is a thiazide-type water pill, and one of its known effects is lowering your body's potassium level. Pu-erh tea contains caffeine, and large amounts of caffeine can also nudge potassium lower. So in theory, stacking the two could make low potassium (hypokalemia) a bit more likely.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is rated a minor, theoretical concern, and a normal cup or two of tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. It's mostly heavy, daily caffeine intake that might matter. Watch for signs like muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, and if your doctor checks your potassium, that's exactly why. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bendroflumethiazide page

“Bendroflumethiazide, a thiazide water pill prescribed for high blood pressure, sits at the serious end of the interaction spectrum, and the ten major-rated entries deserve attention first. Most of the 227 supplements on file either stack their own blood-pressure-lowering effect on top of the drug's or deepen the potassium loss it alrea…”
