Pu-erh Tea and Salbutamol Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS

Why this applies to Salbutamol Sulfate

Salbutamol Sulfate falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of pu-erh tea might increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Caffeine can increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: your Ventolin inhaler (salbutamol) is a quick-acting bronchodilator that can already speed up your heart a little and sometimes leave you feeling jittery or shaky. Pu-erh tea contains caffeine, and caffeine can nudge the heart in the same direction. So when you stack the two, the worry is mainly an additive stimulant effect, things like a faster or more forceful heartbeat, palpitations, or feeling wired.

I'll be honest with you: this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave, not on strong human studies. A normal cup or two of tea is unlikely to cause trouble for most people. It's the large, daily, concentrated amounts that matter more, especially if you use your inhaler often or already feel your heart racing. If that sounds like you, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Salbutamol Sulfate page

“People who rely on salbutamol (Ventolin) to open their airways during asthma or COPD flares should give this list real attention, starting with its one major-rated interaction, activated charcoal. Charcoal, sold in detox and gut-cleanse products, can soak up many medicines and blunt their effect.”
